Jane felt like she was suffering from some pretty serious whiplash.
"Wait, what? There are other shadow manipulators around here?!?"
She edged closer to the end of her shelter. She wasn't quite ready to climb out from under it, but god it was uncomfortable under there.
"So you're a super smart mechani- you're not listening are you?" she said watching him pace back and forth. She hesitated to get out from under the table, but her curiosity won out. She lightly tapped Eiron on the shoulder.
"Okay, one, that's sounds like you're someone pretty special. Two, what do you mean that there are other shadow manipulators? Three, are you sure they're fine in the light? That is so unfair!"

He had continued pacing back and forth, every once in awhile his muttering raising just enough so that she could hear it, "Maybe variations in light would have different reactions? Or... or it could be the percentage of heritage."
When he felt her tap on his shoulder he spun around, his eyebrows practically jumping in to his hair line. He nodded, "I don't consider myself special in this world full of people with extraordinary abilities. I'm just smart. There are other shadow manipulators, but I haven't heard from them in awhile. They're both perfectly fine in the light, as well as their parents who are also shadow manipulators. Wait, are your parents the same as you?"

She honestly had no idea what he was on about. It might have been because he was apparently a freakin' genius or something though. She was a bit overwhelmed by the tidal wave of words that showed no signs of slowing down, but she did manage to catch most of what he said.
"If you mean like, shadow manipulators? No. My mom is a doctor and my dad is a writer. They were a bit...unprepared for my condition."

He snapped his fingers, "That's it! You're a first generation manipulator! You have a freshly mutated gene, rather than one that's been passed down through bloodlines for... generations! Your strain of the gene didn't know to adapt itself to light. But if you were to have kids, they would most likely be less bothered by light. It'd be more like a slightly more than mild irritant. They'd just be... itchy all the time. Gah, if Mom were here, she'd be able to engineer a way to accelerate the mutation in you, maybe even make it so you could stand directly in light without being burnt. Burnt...."
His eyes trailed to her now-burnt cheeks, "I burnt you... Oh I'm so sorry! Oh no, please don't be mad um.... I have some burn cream in the bathroom if you'd like? I burn myself working on things all the time in the shop."
He practically sprinted to the bathroom and started reaching for the light before he stopped himself. Instead he grabbed the candle that was still sitting on the kitchen counter and began rummaging through the medicine cabinet until he found the cream. He turned and held it out to her with one hand and avoided making eye contact with her.

"Right. Okay sure," Yep. She was lost. Something about her getting the short end of the stick for being the first weirdo in the family. The bit about his mom and kids and stuff? Nope.
"No, it's okay. This is really nothing. It'll be okay in a day or two," she raised her hands and tried to get him to settle down. "If it's worse than it feels I have some silvadene cream at home. It'll be okay."
That obviously didn't stop him from going and getting burn cream anyway. She sighed softly and took the offered tube.
"This really isn't necessary," she said dabbing a bit of the cream onto her hands and rubbing it on her face.
"Stop looking like a kicked puppy."

"Sorry, I've just been dying to meet someone that's interesting. And I found someone that's interesting! And almost immediately burnt her by turning on the lights. She's interesting and cute and I burnt her."
He stopped abruptly, " Aaaand I said that out loud. Brilliant Eiron. I'm just going to shut up now. Shutting up in three... two... one."
He grabbed his sandwich from where he set it down earlier and shoved it in his face as it turned almost the same color as Jane's.

Eiron's word-vomit brought her up short. She blinked a couple times before smiling. She was pretty sure if she laughed he would end up with his feelings hurt.
"We-" she stopped short when she saw Eiron's sandwich.
"Ohmygosh, I'm so sorry."
She whipped around to see roughly half of her sandwich. She had no clue where the soda or the other half went when she dove.
"Ahh, I made such a mess. I'm so sorry," she whined while she gathered up what she saw. While she was scooping up the part of her sandwich that she could see she spotted a stray slice of bread poking out from underneath the bed.

He tried speaking for a moment with his mouth still full of bread and processed meat before he swallowed hard and spoke intelligibly, "Oh don't worry about it, you're fine. That is definitely not the worst thing that's been on this floor. You should have seen the place before I cleaned it up."
His eyes traveled to the couch, where he discovered where her soda had ended up, "Well it looks like I found the soda."
He set his plate down again and grabbed the hand towel that hung from the handle of the oven and went over to the couch. Grabbing the now-empty can and flinging it across the room and in to the sink, he began to pat the soaked cushions with the hand towel.

"Ugh, that doesn't make it okaaay." She felt terrible. She'd ruined his couch and made the floor dirty and what if they didn't find all of the sandwich?
Jane wanted the floor to swallow her up. What she didn't notice was that she had in fact sunk about two inches into the floor now that the room was dark enough to have proper shadows again.

Eiron continued patting the couch for a moment, the soda almost instantly soaking the rag. He stood up and began to turn back to the sink to wring it out when he noticed Jane was sinking in to the shadows. Stepping close to her, he put the tips of his fingers under her arm and looking down at her, speaking softly, "Jane, it's alright. The soda will dry up, and the sandwich was lunchmeat that was going bad anyways."
He offered her a small smile, trying to convince her not to disappear without saying anything.

Jane looked up at Eiron and gave a small sigh.
"You're right. I just feel bad, and I know I'm probably over-reacting, but you're super nice and I'd like to get to know you better, and I just feel like I messed up."
She stood up and promptly lost her balance when her ankle collided with the edge of the floor. She wind-milled her arms to keep her balance and looked down.
"Oh," she said. Walking never went so well when not all of her parts were on the same plane.

Eiron gave her a quick smile and sat down on the soda covered couch, immediately leaping back to his feet, "Yyikes! Okay so that pop is still cold!"
He looked over his shoulder at his behind and frowned, "And now I have a wet butt. Excuse me while I go change my coveralls. And stop freaking out!" He pointed a finger at her before grabbing yet another set of coveralls and disappearing in to the bathroom for another few minutes.
Coming back out, he flopped on the bed and looked over at Jane again, "So that's why you knew about this shop already. You've hidden from the light in here before, right?"

Jane chuckled.
"Okay, okay freaking out it ending. Sheesh," she said raising her hands in mock-surrender.
If he would have asked that before when she was flustered she would have forgotten to lie. She cleared her throat once.
"More like hid under that little overhang, but yeah. This far back it doesn't really matter if someone drives past."

He rolled around on the bed for a moment before he began stroking his chin, "I wonder if I could come up with something that would stop you from getting burnt... Something thin, lightweight. Maybe Kevlar? I bet a thin layer of woven Kevlar would probably keep the sunlight out... but that doesn't help with your face. Maybe a helmet of sorts? But that would require a full suit, and I don't know if you'd think it's worth wearing a full suit just so you could go outside during the day... or be protected from the other lights..."
Eiron stopped and looked at her inquisitively, "I'm rambling again, aren't I? I guess I take after Mom a little too much..."

"I don't know. I've tried a lot of things, but none of them work out for very long. The few times I do run to the store or something I'm pretty sure they've been ready to call the cops."
She had settled back against the couch while Eiron talked.
"A little, but you're less crazy than before," she teased.

"I apologize. Believe it or not, my Mom is actually worse. I don't think I've seen her calm down in less than three dogs when she goes on a rant. I think Mother actually knocked her out once just... BAM!" He thrust his fist out in front of him self violently and then let it fall to his side.
"If you'd like though, I could definitely work on something for you. It would only be a suit, but it'd be pretty lightweight. I'd try something with blood but I never really got much in to working on that kind of thing so I'd be afraid I'd.... kill you on accident."
