"There's been a lot of that going on lately from what I've seen in the papers."
She nodded along. So he'd definitely been here the last few times she was. That was awkward, and she had to admit his paranoia made a lot of sense.
"I can't imagine what I would do if my parents when missing," she said. It was the topic she'd been trying to avoid, but there wasn't much choice in the matter now.

"Yeah I uh... I came home from working on something for a neighbor and the house had been ransacked... I don't know why I didn't call the police...."
At this thought he began to look a little forlorn. He sat back further in the bed and pulled his knees up to his chest, resting his chin on his knees.
"I never asked how old you were by the way. I mean, I know I'm not supposed to, but I feel like we're both young enough to not care about age quite yet."

"That's like...insanely creepy."
She scooted a bit closer to Eiron.
"They sound like they're pretty tough ladies. They're probably okay," she said without being sure if she really believed that or not.
"Me? I'm twenty-three. What about you?" She rubbed her hands together while she tried to think of something that would actually be useful to say.

"Right? I tried getting in to the camera feeds, but they'd all been wiped and powered down. It was like our own security took them."
He nodded, "I hope they're at least together," He pointed to the tougher looking woman in the picture, "Mother is military. Pretty high up from what I could tell," he pointed to the other woman, "Mom is a scientist though. She's where I got my love of working with my hands. She was always trying to get me to build new things, but all I ever wanted to do was repair old stuff."
"Oh! I'm twenty-two. I haven't been on my own long though."

"Sounds like you guys were pretty well off," she mused, "This is gonna sound lame, but did you guys have any enemies?"
Jane nodded. She should have figured that from looking at the picture earlier. She wasn't sure what to say about the ladies that wouldn't risk upsetting Eiron.
"Yeah, me either. I like it most of the time, but there really aren't a lot of night-owls in this town with how tiny it is."
She leaned back on the couch.
"Man, if I would have known that I was going to be crashing your night I would have brought some food or something."

"Well they both worked for the government and were pretty high up there when it came to security clearance, so I guess they made quite a bit of money," He hugged his knees tighter to his chest, "I mean, being that high up in the government, they were bound to make people mad at some point right?"
"I like living on my own though. It does get a bit lonely, but no one hung out with me much anyways. I'm a bit of an insomniac, so I tend to sleep at odd times."
He perked up at the thought of food, "I have some here! The power is out anyways, so if doesn't get eaten it'll probably go bad. I have some sandwich stuff and I think there's ice cream in the freezer!"
Eiron jumped up from the bed and strode across the room to the fridge and pulled it open. Only one shelf had food on it, the rest of the fridge had been allocated to sodas and energy drinks. Pulling the sandwich stuff out, he set it on the small portion of the counter. He reached up in to a cupboard and nabbed an almost full loaf of bread and sat it down as well, "Help yourself! I feel bad about you having to be stuck in this musty old shop with me."

Jane nodded. It made sense, but if he wanted any theories he would have been better off talking to her dad. He had always been a bit of an eccentric when it came to the government. Must have been a writer thing.
"Well if they worked for the government and something bad went down at least you know that they probably have at least one team of people looking for them even if the police never got called."
She hoped that this information might make him feel a bit more at ease.
"Yeah, I'm mostly liking being on my own. It's sort of nice having things the way I like them without feeling like I might be getting in my mom or dad's way," she admitted. They'd been hesitant about her moving out, but they deserved to be able to have the lights on in their home without worrying about where she was or if she might need to come down the hall. Heck, they deserved to be able to have a refrigerator light.
Jane perked up at the food news. Normally by now she would have wandered back home for a snack since she's forgotten her lunch.
"Are you sure? You just met me today and I feel weird eating your food. And don't feel bad aboutme being here. If I really didn't want to I could have just gone home. It's alright in here actually."

"Dig in! I've got like four packs of lunch meat here that will go bad unless someone eat it. I'm definitely not going to eat four pounds of meat by myself, that's just insane," he pointed back to the open door of the fridge, "Help yourself to some soda while it's cold."
Turning a bit, he placed a hand on the stove and then hopped up on it, resting his head on the cupboards, "Maybe you could come hang out with me sometimes. I can show you some cool stuff. Even the tank!"

"Yeah, that would be a bit excessive,"Jane laughed. She didn't need to be told twice and quickly assembled a sandwich and snagged a soda before settling back down.
"Thanks," she said between bites. She stopped short and tilted her head.
"Yeah, that could be fun. I could bring some food next time....what are you doing?" She was enjoying herself, but she wasn't sure about the logistics of her actually getting to come hang out again.

He tilted his head to watch her as she moved from making her sandwich to the fridge and returning to her spot on the couch. A slight smile played across hips lips as he let his heels drum against the front of the stove. She's pretty cute. He blushed at his own thought before shaking it off.
Hoping down, he started making his own sandwich and grabbed an energy drink before turning back to her, "What do you mean what am I doing?"

Jane made a face somewhere between a smirk and "huh?" expression.
"Well now you're eating, but what were you doing on the stove?" She really couldn't think of any reason for ANYONE to be on a stove.

"I dunno I felt like sitting on it for a bit. I'll do it again!" He hopped back up on the stove, "We live on our own, Jane. We can do whatever we want. Want to sit on the stove? Fine! Want to build tanks in your spare time? Do it! Want to sneak around scrapyards and scare unsuspecting mechanics? Well apparently I'm not going to stop you!" He laughed and bit in to his sandwich, shooting her a huge grin while he chewed.
Swallowing hard, "So, what should we do th-"
Half way through his sentence, he looked out in to the shop through the window over Jane's head and saw a blinking light next to a box. He set his sandwich down and jumped down from the stove. Walking over to the door going out of the room, he put his hand on the light switch and said, "I think the power is back on!" Just as he flipped the switch and filled the room with dull, low wattage light.

She shook her head slowly while laughing at the sudden tangent that Eiron had apparently launched on. She took a sip of her soda.
When Eiron stopped halfway through his question she immediately focused on what he was doing. Something was up. She looked around, but didn't see what he had.
"The wh- AHH!"
Jane dove for the table letting her soda and sandwich go in the process. Even with the low wattage she was freaked out. If she stayed in it for too long she would pay for it. As it was it felt like what normal people would consider a second day sunburn on her hands and neck.
"Shit shit shit shit. Great, yeah, you make a friend and then they find out that you're a freak and they lose their shit and you hide in your house for weeks. Yep! GREAT! Great plan Jane!"
She looked around the room wildly. She wasn't a fan of jumping out of the window, but she also didn't want to explain herself either. Maybe she should have gone for the shadow?

Eiron yelped and jumped back when she dove under the table. For just a split second he thought maybe she had finally decided to murder him after all. Once he regained his composure, he realized that she hadn't gone after him. He slowly walked over to the table and crouched down, "Hey, sorry, I forgot you don't like the ligh-t-s." His sentence trailing off as he saw the red sunburn color on her face.
It instantly clicked in his head as he jumped back up and shut the light off, then turned back towards her, "You really ARE scared of the light! You're a shadow manipulator, aren't you?"
He danced around a little bit, "That's why you were able to sneak up on me out in the scrapyard, and why you didn't need a light in the bathroom!"

Jane was about two seconds from hyperventilating when Eiron re-entered her admittedly narrowed field of vision. When the light turned back off she relaxed quite a lot. It didn't take away the fear of what could happen next, but with more dark there was more of a chance that she could move freely.
She felt her jaw go slack for a second when Eiron just like...rattled off that she was a shadow manipulator like it was something he was familiar with or something.
"Wait, wait, wait, what? How could you even guess something like that?" The fact that her shadow manipulation had almost nothing to do with her ability to sneak up on him didn't feel important to mention. It wasn't her fault that he had been absorbed in his work.
"Are you like...different too?"

"Guess? It wasn't a guess! You're like my friends Sven and Reinhart! They're brothers, but they're both shadow manipulators too. Rein isn't so good at it though... He got stuck in a tree once."
He began to pace, "Me? Different? No no.... I mean unless you count having the highest IQ ever on record, but IQ means nothing to most people. But you!" He looked at her excitedly, "You are so cool! But.... the light hurts you?" He looked puzzled for a moment, "It doesn't hurt the other two. They can stand in full sunlight with no issues. Now why is that..."
His pacing continued as he started to talk to himself under his breath as well.
